Metamorphosis (Series)
Inflated Regal Fritillary
In this large painting, 40 regal fritillary butterflies are meticulously arranged in rows and columns, gradually transitioning from lifelike depictions to balloon forms. The regal fritillary (Speyeria idalia) is currently listed as vulnerable, highlighting the species' declining numbers. While balloons are often associated with cheerfulness, the reality is that mylar balloons are not biodegradable and can persist in the environment indefinitely, posing significant threats to wildlife and ecosystems. Yet, this transformation invites viewers to consider the potential for change, urging a renewed focus on conservation and the protection of these fragile species.
